    Episode 20 Commentary

I’m sorry I wasn’t able to keep up. Last time, it’s 3 episodes but now I see 8 episodes. I won’t be able to catch up but I still hope whatever comment I give would still be valuable for you.

Anyway, last time, looking at my notes, some threads started to get resolved. That’s my expectation for Episode 20.

I might find it mixed, but I have reason to believe that some plot development will  take place, although it would not be as fast as I would have it.

    Anyway, let’s begin.

#2 This is similar to the fast forward time skip in the original, but this might be expressed differently. I’m not sure if Wangshin felt it too.

#3 seems out of place. It suggests that the modern day dressed guy is Wang Shin, but I get the sense that he is supposed to be a different person.

#4 It cool that, even though Yoon-hee doesn’t experience these things in real time, there’s a memory for it. This is a unique addition over the original.

#5 now we see Yon-hee talking to Kangchul.

Getting to this scene feels abrupt. We just see them in the middle of it.

#10 so far, these scenes with the director, actress Han Hyojoo, and screenwriters feels more like filler or some scenes intended to amuse and even intended to add some meta humour.

Except for that moment when KC found Renbo near the filming location, I tend to fast forward with these scenes.

#12.flashback 08…I can see the point of this dialogue. It explores the crazy events of the original that many viewers deemed illogical. We all know that it was supposed to be unpredictable and “illogical” due to the actions of the killer.

But I also see how this scene tries to address the critics of W.

#15 now we’re back to the Queen of Darkness.

I mentioned that in a previous frame, I felt disoriented to see Yonhee talking with Kangchul about Queen of Darkness. On second thought, that must have been a flashforward, and the following scenes might lead to it.

Again, I can’t wait to go to that.

#18. Why do I have this impression that Yonhee and Wangshin both got transported to the real world?

Anyway, it’s banter that I’m bored and rather skip, but I can see the progress of their relationship.

#19 since “real world” was given for this frame, it confirms that they’re still in the manhwa. The disguised form of Wangshin belongs to the real world though.

    #27

I’m not yet invested with the characters close to Princess Yonhee, but I’m smiling that I see familiar faces from Dongyi.

These frames also allow Yonhee to indulge with her perverted side.

    #34

The mysterious teddy bear suddenly appeared, and this is a good cliff hanger for what otherwise is dragging. I suppose I’ll have to bear with this bit by bit.

Your comments are always very valuable. And gives me a great motivation, as I continue the corrections, sometimes difficult, with many decisions to make. By favoring more movement, deleting some heavy dialogues or recomposing them.

As I mentioned before, episodes 20 to 22 are calmer. Comedy, slice of life, characterization, it breathes a little. Some happy and light moments, which will be regretted later, when more and more dramas accumulate. Still, various resolutions and swarming of future events.

#3. Wang Shin is inspired by Joseon Gunman (same actor). A drama which takes place at the end of the 19th century, at the same time as Queen of Darkness (episode 1, Subtitle: Joseon, year 1887). That's why he has a revolver and can wear a western costume (a bit retro).

Here are some pictures of this drama :

#4. Among the new concepts of the season 2. Some of which you've already seen.

#5. Yoon-Hee is not talking to Kang Chul. She is in voice-over (thought) and remembers an image of manhwa W (look at the MANHWA scene header). CORRECTION: I made a change to makes this more clear (new image + precision in the scene header).

#10. Yes, meta-comedy. Without comedy, I'll take this out, as it doesn't advance the plot. Still, there are some useful relationships in it, but not many. I did shorten it though. But it's a kdrama and not a movie, so we can breathe a little every now and then. It feels good that the characters have a life, are happy, it amplifies the later dramas. It's always like that in a drama: seeing happy people is a bad sign for the future...

#12. Good point. Indeed, I took advantage of this to talk about the criticisms (which I have often noted). I also put a line about the screenwriter of W who is indeed under fire and blasted on the internet. Seeing the screenwriter arguing with her character, it was stronger than me, I had to do it ! ^^

#18. Comedy, but of course as you note, progression. Some gags in it, and the last one when she tries to kiss him. It's typical of kdrama when during a scene, the characters don't talk to each other but think instead. The waiter in the restaurant is from Dong Yi. The King too!

#27. Obviously, Yoon-Hee seems to want this man. Ahah. There are several useful pieces of information on the way back to the palace. The sequence of events is built so that the King finds Wang Shin in the palanquin at the end. This is the second cliffhanger of the episode.

#34. Just enjoy the peaceful journey while you can. Their life won't stay this sweet forever ;-)
