    Episode 8 Commentary

#1-5, except for the panic of Soo-bong’s disappearance, it’s pretty light-hearted so far.

As for Kang-ta’s discussion with the director regarding Kang-chul knowing in advance that Yeon-joo wouldn’t be hurt, I’m a bit surprised that this detail flies out to people in the ‘real world.’ There was dialogue to explain the fact, wasn’t it?

And then it’s funny that the director is basically changing the details for lack of budget.

    ____

#7. "Butterfly Girl" - Road (day).

#8. Road, In Sin-Moo's car (day).

    This is pretty much standard.

    _____

#10. "Real World" - Parking (day).

#11. Parking, In Yeon-Joo's car (day).

Soo-bong reappears in the real world. He also mentioned that Park Sin-moo was modelled after the young Park Min-soo, Yeon-joo’s professor.

I recall in an earlier episode that the writer of Butterfly Girl loved Prof Park back when they were younger. I’ve only noticed by now that even the names are similar: Min-soo v. Sin-moo — an anagram!

I have to admit. This is the moment that I’ve realised why writer Jang Soo-bin was outraged at changing the story of Butterfly Girl. This is her way of living out her fantasy of a loving relationship with Park Min-soo by way of the would have been romance by Ren-bo and Min-soo.

Yet, Soo-bong disappears yet again. By this time, it has become obvious that the rules of appearance/disappearance to/from Butterfly Girl is different to that of W.

    __________

    #15. Mungsey Hospital, Elevator (day).

The guy who replaced Yeon-joo was obviously from The Good Doctor. I haven’t watched it, but I reckon that I will find this even more hilarious had I watched that.

    ___________

    #17. Min-Soo's office (day).

    ‘Wang Shin is dead’

An angry Min-soo is always comedy gold!

    ___

    #18. Mungsey Hospital, Corridor (day).

Won Yun-suk had something to do with it, but why? A silly prank or something more sinister?

    _______

    #19. Mi-Ra's Living room (day).

This Mira’s had a poster of a David Lynch film. Is she a fan of his trippy movies?

Anyway, now I’m clear that Mi-ra is the writer for Queen of Darkness and Kim Yoon-hee is the illustrator, would that mean that Yoon-hee will be the person to enter Queen of Darkness?

    _____________

I like that Soo-bong was reunited with Ren-bo. This is slightly better than the previous episode.

The end of #26 hit me by surprise. Wtf just happened? Is this a hint for some of Ren-bo’s undeveloped abilities?

    ___

#30. Village surroundings, Steep path (day).

Fairy Spark reappears. I’m glad she’s not gone for good!

    ----

At this point, Soo-bong’s disappearance is nothing new. But it still frightens Ren-bo who is still clueless about manhwas getting alive.

#5. The trigger for me to write this drama: I wanted to make a short parody video about it, and I had some ideas. I gave up because I have no video editing skills. This triggered more ideas, unintentionally, when the project was supposed to be closed. And not parody ideas, dramatic ideas. In fact a storm of ideas, uninterrupted for months. Thousands of them. I wrote everything down. Until I had no choice but to make a story out of it. Finally, some ideas of parody come back in the story thanks to the shooting scenes with Director Jung. This doesn't make the story any faster, since it makes extra scenes. But I figure that comedy scenes are never wasted, and Kang Chul and Yeon-Joo had to do something during Soo-Bong's tribulations.

#5. Director Jung Dae Yoon knows some of the details of W. I just extrapolated from the fact that this was told in the manhwa W. Because in the manhwa, it's clear when Kang Chul shoots Oh Sung-Moo. I don't know the exact amount of information that the manhwa contains about the whole saga that Kang Chul and Yoon-Joo went through. Not everything was reported in the manhwa I think. But it's hard to know what. For example, the events at the end (the disappearance of Oh Sung-Moo) were not carried over, because they were out of context.

#11. The anagram: ah ah. You read too fast and let the details slip. ^^

Here you discovered one of the pay-offs of two scenes in episode 2. I think it was possible to guess before, but still, even later, understanding one of the threads of the story is always fun. This confirms to me that the story is probably of the same nature as season 1: worth revisiting, as many details are only identifiable in the second pass. This makes me rather happy, I was dreaming to produce this effect. ;-)

Why Soo-Bin wrote this strange story. Why she was so angry when Soo-Bong changed the story. It involves a terrible sacrifice. The wings of Ren-Bo, are here an allegory of the creative ability. The mind that can fly and imagine. Professor Park chose Da-Ye, an ordinary woman, instead of Soo-Bin the artist and creator. Soo-Bin internalized that she should have amputated her creative ability to live this love and be a woman like Da-Ye. A lot of suffering and misguidance. By proxy, she puts the burden on Ren-Bo, who is in charge of living this love story. And she transmits to Ren-Bo this sordid urge to want to amputate her wings/creativity, arranging her world to martyr her. Until the end, when Sin-Moo clips her wings and she can get married. This is profound for Soo-Bin since in episode 2, we see that she is sketching the character, even though she will not write this story until 20 years later. Since it has deep psychological implications, no one is able to see or understand it. Soo-Bong and Yoon-Joo did not understand it. Soo-Bin herself is certainly not aware of it.

#15. Joo Won is indeed the actor of Good Doctor. But here I took images from Yong-Pal, where he plays a surgeon. And the character has a personality and expressions that are more like Won Yun Suk.

#17, #19. In the story, I had two concerns:

        - Not to lose sight of Professor Park Min-Soo completely, but without giving him much screen time, because he is no longer Yoon-Joo's teacher. So, as a reason to appear, he has the manhwa Queen of darkness.

        - In the first arc of the drama, have at least one scene reviewing the situation of this manhwa, with Moon Mi Ra and Kim Yoon Hee. Yoon Hee is an assistant, as Soo-Bong was for Sung-Moo. In a line of dialogue, Mi-Ra says that she is the greatest cartoonist in Korea. Unlike Soo-Bin who is only a writer, Mi-Ra is the author (writer and main artist), as was Oh Sung-Moo.

At first, these scenes were in another episode, but it was not going well. When I corrected the script, I put them in this one because it allows a natural sequence of scenes:

        - In the car, Yoon-Joo talks about Sin-Moo and Min-Soo, and Soo-Bong refers to Professor Park.

        - This allows the scene with professor Park to follow. And as he is preoccupied by Queen of Darkness, it allows the segue with...

        - The scene with Mi Ra and Yoon Hee.

#19. It's simple, as an horror story writer, she likes to watch horror movies. It's not a detail so important (I don't even mention it in the script), but I still choose some images with a kind of meaning: "eraser-head" and the metal band show a brain in a kind of mettalic cage. So, it was better to choose eraserhead than another movie, like "The Shining" for example.
